Be sure to check up the hill for oncoming skiers before you start.

Facing across the hill, start in a traverse while standing solely on the downhill ski. Lift the uphill ski slightly off the snow.

Feel the arch of the foot you are standing on. Try to balance by using ankle adjustments to fine tune your stance.

• It becomes much easier to stay in balance if you flex all the joints in your legs slightly.

Keep the downhill ski from slipping sideways by rolling that ankle into the hill--feel the edge bite into the snow.

While traversing, alternately touch the tip and tail of your uphill ski to the snow without rocking your body back and forth--just use your ankle.

  • Keep your shin in slight contact with the tongue of your supporting leg's boot.
  • Keep your upper body facing slightly down the hill.
  • Keep your hands in front where you can see them.

Try this in both directions.

Now, try the traverse standing on the uphill ski. Move across the hill standing on the uphill ski with the downhill ski off the snow. Touch the tail, then tip of the downhill ski to the snow, using only ankle movements.
