Skiing smoothly in the bumps requires absorption of the terrain with your legs while keeping your upper body relatively steady. This ability will reduce the "launching pad" effect.

Passive absorption
Keeping a strong upper body, relax your legs and begin a traverse across a series of bumps.

Keep your legs relaxed enough to let the pressure of the skis climbing the bump push your legs up to a flexed position. By keeping your legs relaxed, as the terrain falls away, your legs will extend automatically.

  • Keep your skis on the snow.
  • Keep your hands forward and in your field of vision.
  • Try to keep your head and shoulders at the same level--not bobbing up and down--as your legs flex and extend.

Active absorption
Most of the time in the moguls, you should be active to keep from accumulating too much pressure against the skis.

Traverse across a series of small bumps. Upon approaching the mogul, quickly pull your legs up toward your body's center before the bump increases pressure against the skis,

At the top of the mogul, begin to straighten the legs and extend them down and away from you.

  • Think of thrusting the tips of your skis into the valley between the moguls and pulling the tips up to avoid increased pressure from the bump.

Keep your chest over your feet and your hands in your field of vision.

Keep your head and shoulders at the same level at all times, as if there were a ceiling above your head.

Practice by doing it more and more actively--until you actually jump over the mogul. Then smooth it out and move to progressively larger moguls.
