- It is best to do this on fairly easy to moderate
terrain to begin with, because you'll pick up speed quickly.
Face straight down the flow line with your eyes on a
target down the hill.
With lazy extensions at first, then with more and more
energy, skate straight down the flow line.
- Don't sway from side to side.
After a few skating steps comes the moment: The ski you
are stepping onto becomes the outside ski in the short turn--as you step onto
it, your body continues to move straight down the hill, thereby putting that ski
onto edge.
Aggressively extend off that edged ski and carve a short
turn--quickly match the inside ski (that you stepped from) to finish the turn.
Continue making short turns.
- Let the deflection of the skis (decambering) shape the
turn.
- Complement the turn shape (make it shorter) by steering
your skis.
- Don't sway from side to side. "Pump" with
your arms. Your legs should be working directly under you and your eyes and
upper body should be steady and stay focused on a target down the hill.
