This is a rather difficult exercise to master, so don't get too discouraged.

Start with your skis pointed down the flow line.

Start lightly stepping onto the outside edge of the inside ski. (The little toe side of the ski.)

Immediately following the step onto the outside edge, step onto the outside edge of the other ski. This will feel somewhat like marching.

Whatever you do, don't linger on the edge. Get off of it immediately!

When you make the first couple of steps, nothing much will happen. You must trust that turns will happen. Don't try to force turns--the mechanics of this exercise are amazing.

  • Time your pole swing with the step. It is a very quick action. The pole touches as you set down the little toe edge.
  • Keep your upper body, hands, and pole swing facing down the flow line.

Continue this action until you have established a good short turn rhythm.

Pay attention to the changing edges and angles made by the rotation of the leg once you have a rhythm going.

Tips:

  • Stay compact.
  • Keep light contact between your shins and the tongues of your boots--stay in the Sweet spot.
  • Keep the upper body constantly moving down the flow line.

Print this out for future reference and remember to have fun!
