Begin slowly in a traverse with your upper
body slightly countered to face toward the flow line.
Lift the uphill ski off the snow and point it to face down
the flow line (tip toward the flow line, tail up the hill.) Your stance will
resemble a wedge with the uphill ski off the snow.
Bang it down on the inside edge of the uphill and continue
to stand on it while carving the turn.
As you stand on that one, ready the other by lifting it
and pointing the tip toward the flow line. Hold it there, then bang it down on
its edge and steer it to shape the turn as you lift the other ski to point it to
the flow line.
Do this a number of times to get a feel for it, then add
the pole swing and touch--swing your pole down the hill as you point the tip of
the uphill ski into the flow line. Touch the pole and then, bang down onto the
edge of the redirected ski.
- Practice this and pay attention to the angle of the
hips in the turn, how the ski shoots down the hill as you bang it down, and
how little slipping of the skis is involved.
Keep the ankle and knee rolled into the hill to maintain
the edge angle, while anticipating the upcoming turn with the upper body and
pole swing.
The minute you bang the ski down, you're in the turn.
