Find a fairly flat spot where you'll be out of the way of other
skiers. Now take your skis off and hold your poles in your hands.
Start walking from side to side, occasionally changing direction. Notice
which foot leads into the direction change.
Does the inside foot remain stationary as the outside foot moves around it?
Or, does the inside foot move first?
Do you require your upper body to make some sort of movement to change
direction, or do your legs know how to change direction on their own?
- As you change direction, you'll notice that it's your inside leg that
moves first toward the new direction.
Find an incline and walk down it, turning from side to side, focusing on
having your downhill foot be the first to turn.
Now involve your poles
As you make your first step to change direction, simultaneously swing your
downhill pole down the flow line.
Keep it at a walking pace until you have the coordination. Then, try it while
running.
- The next time you're just walking down the street and you turn to go into
a store, be conscious of which leg and foot initiates the turn--apply it to
your skiing.
