Well-tuned skis is probably THE biggest single contributor to skiing ability and enjoyment.

Don't think for one moment that the professionals do it well only because of the skills they've acquired -- they tune their skis regularly, and so should you.

Follow these guidelines:
If you can afford it, get an "Edge touchup" after every day on icy or hard conditions; every 4 days otherwise. If you can't afford it, buy tools and do it yourself.

Get a "Full tune-up" after 10 days on the snow. This should include:

  • Base cleaning
  • Stone grinding
  • Edge beveling
  • Hand finishing
  • Hot wax

Avoid old belt sanders like the plague and if you don't like your tune-up, discuss your problems with the ski shop and negotiate another tune-up to your liking.

Print this out for future reference and remember to have fun!
