In a Bullfighter turn position, start with the
wedge pointing down the flow line on a very gentle slope; one that you have
skied in control happily before.
• Decide which direction you want to turn to
first.
Start and as you begin to move, lift the toes on
the side that you want to turn to and add the power and pointing of the other
ski to bring the wedge across the hill. Continue lifting your toes and power
pointing, until the wedge points across the hill and you have come to a stop.
Try this in both directions by starting in the
flow line.
Now, point the skis slightly across the flow line
in a wedge, in the opposite direction from where you're going to turn to. (If
you're going to turn left, point slightly right of the flow line.)
Lift the toes and keeping your shins in contact
on the front of the boot, add the power pointing of the other foot--keep the
action going until your skis are pointed in the opposite direction. You have
just successfully completed a turn.
Again, keep contact with the front of the boot
and lift the toes of the downhill foot, add the power point of the other foot to
compliment the lifting toes and your skis will turn.
Now, connect one turn to the next. Lift the
downhill ski's toes and power point around--keep lifting and pointing to shape
the turn. Before you come to a stop, begin lifting the toes of the new downhill
foot and power point to compliment and shape the turn.
• As you practice, try making the wedge a
little smaller. Then play around with different wedge shapes and speeds.
When you feel that you have mastered the wedge
turn and have full control, go on to a slightly steeper slope--but stay on green
beginner terrain.
Remember:
• Keep shin contact with the tongues of the
boots.
• Keep all joints flexed comfortably
• Keep the ski tips on the snow.
• Keep the upper body quiet and let the legs do the "work."
• Keep looking where you're going, not at your feet.
• RELAX and be confident.
