Wedge with finesse

Goal: Beginning turns
Level: Beginner
Suggested terrain
: Very gentle beginner slope.
Author: Suzy Chase-Motzkin
Summary:  You can make wedge turns in both directions and have probably explored some steeper terrain. Perhaps you're also skiing a bit faster. Refining your wedge will help you flow from turn to turn, so that you can have even more fun.

Ski in a wedge and start a new turn by lifting the toes of the downhill foot. As the skis begin to drift into the flow line add the power pointing or steering of the other ski.

Keep your shins in contact with the front of the boot and keep the action going until the skis are pointed in the other direction.

To make the turns more fluid, focus on:

• Beginning each new turn the moment the skis cross the flow line.
• Making the movements flow from one action to the other without rushing, pausing or hesitation.

Turn both feet at the same time:

• Think of driving a stick shift: The lifting of the toes is taking the clutch off and the power pointing is putting the gas on. It happens simultaneously.

Or, riding a bicycle with toe straps on the pedals: one foot is pulling up a pedal while the other is going down.

Rhythm to enhance the flow from turn to turn:

• Inhale as you lift the toes and exhale as you power point through the turn.
• Count through the turn.
• Sing a rhythmic song.

Keep these things in mind and you will be on your way to finessing the wedge.
