Wedge Goal: Beginning turns Level: Beginner Suggested terrain: Flat snow Author: Kobus Reyneke Summary: The word "wedge" refers to the shape that the skis make relative to each other. This wedge is pointed in the direction of travel and offers great stability when you are gliding down the hill. It can also be referred to as a triangle (or a pizza if you're hungry.) Let's first get a feel for the wedge On flat terrain, put your ski tips together and spread the tails about two feet apart. Walk around holding your skis in that position; like a pigeon-toed walk. Now, using your poles to push yourself, glide on your skis in this wedge position. Keep both skis on the snow, evenly weighted, and keep your navel between your feet. Next, start with straight skis and gradually twist your legs to widen the skis into a wedge. Notice that as you widen it, it becomes more difficult to push yourself. This is a handy skill to have, as it will help you to slow down. Lowering your body will help to widen the wedge and in doing so, will make the skis edge more--slowing you down even more. Now you know what a "Wedge" looks like. Print this out for future
