• You MUST first determine that you are heading for
terrain that is appropriate for your skiing ability--Green circles only!
Because each ski area has its own policy regarding rope
tows and lifts and situations vary tremendously from lift to lift, we will only
provide some general pointers.
• Do not attempt to assist anyone if you are a beginner
yourself. Ask for assistance if you need it.
Hints for using the rope tow:
• Check for any loose clothing and secure it--zip
zippers, tuck in scarves, etc.
• Wear good, but old gloves.
• Gradually tighten your grip on the rope if you cherish full mobility of your
arms.
• Balance and brace yourself against the pull of the rope.
• Maintain a straight run stance all the way to the top.
• Relax.
• Keep the tips of your skis pointed toward the top of the lift.
• Above all,--keep standing tall!
• Put your poles aside until you are familiar with the rope tow. If you must
carry your poles, hold them in the outside hand or squeeze them under your
outside arm.
• When you reach the top of the lift, let go of the rope and step to the
side--get your skis pointed across the hill as quickly as possible to avoid
sliding backwards. The unloading area should be marked. Be careful not to cling
to the rope too long--getting your fingers caught in a pulley is not part of the
exercise.
• Get out of the way of skiers behind you on the rope as soon as possible.
• If you lose your balance and fall, immediately roll or crawl away from the
tow area.
• Start your ascent from the bottom where an attendant is on duty--never
approach and grab the rope in the middle of the hill.
