• You MUST first determine that you are heading for
terrain that is appropriate for your skiing ability--Green circles only!
Because each ski area has its own policy regarding rope
tows and lifts and situations vary tremendously from lift to lift, we will only
provide some general pointers.
• Don't hesitate to ask the attendant to slow the lift
or even stop it.
• Don't rush into a situation--it's better to let a chair go by and prepare
for the next go around.
Before entering the loading area remove your poles from
your wrists and hold them in the hand closest to your lift partner. When
requested (usually immediately after the previous chair had passed,) briskly
shuffle forward to the loading point.
Look over your "outside" shoulder with your hand
reaching for the chair's upright bar. When the chair arrives, hold on to the
seat with your free hand and sit down without delay. Be careful not to sit in
your partner's lap.
Immediately after loading, lower the safety bar if the
chair has one. If not, sit way back in the seat and hold on to the chair.
• Hold onto your poles securely.
• Never swing your skis back and forth on a chair.
When you approach the unloading area, lift the safety bar
and prepare body and soul for the unloading.
Lift the tips of your skis slightly as you approach the
off ramp.
When your skis touch down on the off ramp, stand up fully
and push yourself forward and away from the chair. It's very important to stand
up and project yourself forward into a straight run down the unloading ramp to
avoid falling backwards after unloading.
• Concentrate on the "slope" beyond the
unloading area--this will help you project forward.
Move quickly away from the unloading area to clear a path
for skiers following you.
