Getting up (from the snow)

Goal: Getting started
Level: Beginner
Suggested terrain: Flat snow.
Author: Kobus Reyneke
Summary:  Be prepared--when you're learning to ski, you'll fall. Fortunately the snow is soft so you just have to learn to fall safely and get up easily.

  • If you're feeling out of control or start going too fast, simply sit down on the snow to the uphill side of your skis. You'll only "fall" about two feet. Your feet will bring you to a stop--like a baseball player sliding onto base.

When you have fallen on a flat slope it can sometimes be quite difficult to get up. Remember that you can always remove a ski first and then easily get up.

  • When on a steeper slope it's not wise to remove a ski, as it can sometimes be difficult to put back on. The tilt of the hill will help you get back up.

After a fall

  • Firstly give yourself a quick once over to make sure you're not hurt. If you feel serious pain, don't move and ask another skier to summon the ski patrol.

Lie on your side and position the skis so that they are down the hill from your body and facing across the slope.

Bring your legs up tightly to your body, keeping your skis across the slope.

Put the poles together. Place one hand on top of the pole grips and the other hand by the baskets.

"Plant" the poles near your hips on the uphill side.

Lean forward. Pull with the top hand (on top of the grips) and "walk" the other hand up the poles as you begin to stand.

• Needless to say, you'll have the opportunity to try this often.

Print this out for future reference and remember to have fun!
